Insert a Non-printable Character

The Insert Token button on the Create panel makes it easy to insert the following regular expression tokens to match specific characters. See the Insert Token help topic for more details on how to build up a regular expression via this menu.

The Non-printable Character submenu of the Insert Token menu lets you insert one of 10 commonly used non-printable characters. RegexBuddy will insert the character’s escape letter if the regex flavor supports it. Otherwise it inserts a hexadecimal escape. If the flavor doesn’t support any escapes then it inserts the character literally. Non-printable characters can be inserted inside and outside character classes. RegexBuddy correctly handles escape rules inside and outside character classes, which are different for some regex flavors.

• Tab: \t or \x09.
• Any line break: \R matches any line break regardless of its style, and regardless of the active line break mode. This includes the line feed and carriage return characters as line breaks, whether they appear alone or as a pair, as well as the vertical tab \v, the form feed \f, next line \u0085, line separator \u2028, and paragraph separator \u2029 characters. So this token matches two characters in case of a CRLF line break, and a single character in case of any other line break.
• Carriage return: \r or \x0D.
• Line feed: \n or \x09. Remember that Windows text files use \r\n to terminate lines, while UNIX text files use \n.
• Alert (Bell): \a or \x07.
• Escape: \e or \x1B.
• Form Feed: \f or \x0C.
• Vertical Tab: \v or \x0B.
